Interest in betel cultivation has increased among the farmers of Betagir

After the epidemic, the farmers of Betagir in the coastal town of Barguna started cultivating karla. They have become interested in cultivating karla as they can make more profit with less capital in a short time. Due to favorable weather, good yields have been achieved in this season and farmers are getting good prices due to high demand in hot and humid weather.

According to the Upazila Agriculture Office, karalla has been cultivated in 228 hectares of land in 6 unions including Betagi municipality this season. Yield is usually 40 to 50 days after planting. The popularity of this crop is increasing among the farmers as the yield is available in just one and a half months. Due to this karla cultivation is becoming popular day by day in this upazila.

Karla's yield has also doubled this season as compared to last two years. Besides, the farmers have got better prices this time. The vegetables collected from the farmers are being exported to different parts of the country including Dhaka and Barisal to meet the local demand of the region.

Abdur Rahman, a vegetable seller in the municipal town, said that the produce of this upazila has been being sold in the market for several years now. It is in great demand during Ramadan and summer. '

These karlas are being sold in different markets including Municipal City Bazar, Bibichini, Putiakhali, Mokamia, Hosnabad, Kazirhat, Kumrakhali, Chandkhali Bazar. Due to fasting and hot weather, the price has gone up by Tk 10-15 per kg in the last few days. In the last few days, it was sold at Rs 30-40 per kg depending on the variety. At present it is being sold at 50-65 rupees per kg.

Saddam Hussein, a karla farmer in Hosnabad, said he had been making a profit by cultivating karla since last year. I have seen that other farmers in the village are also inclined to cultivate karla. '

Upazila Agriculture Officer. Iqbal Hossain said, "I hope the cultivation will increase in the future as the yield and price are good this time." In order to improve its yield, the Deputy Assistant Officers of the Agriculture Office are providing necessary assistance and advice to the farmers.
